I remember we had to sign a pledge as freshmen; it had to do with social organizations - sororities and frats - that were banned beginning, I beleive , with our class. The reason , according to 50 year old rumors, were that a number of the members of the class of '75 may have been conceived as a result, I'm sure indirectly, of some of the parties sponsored by these organizations! Whatever the reason, we had to pledge that we were not members, nor would we become members, of these clubs.
ReplyDeleteWow.... I don't remember the ban. I do remember getting a slat accross my backside at the fraternity house on more than one occassion. Wish I had signed the ban and stayed out. Would have been more comfortable :-)
ReplyDeleteI remember that sororities were banned before the start of our freshman year in high school. They existed in Junior High.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember also that our class held a graduation party at our old house on 15th street after we had moved to Indian Hills and before the old house was sold. I also seem to remember that the water had been turned off to the house and so we designated a "girls tree" and a "boys tree" out in the yard. Seems to me that beer -- horrors -- made a first appearance at that party. Is my memory correct?
I don't remember that party. Of course, based upon your description, there is a good reason I would not remember it!
ReplyDeleteI was not sure where to put this bit of news, but in our Alabama Baptist newspaper this week I saw a picture of our old chorus director...Gene Black. He retired from Samford after many years as assistant conductor and assistant dean of the school of music. If there are any Baptists out there, you can see a picture of him. They "sang" his praises for impacting literally hundreds at Samford. Remember the fine a cappella recording we made at FBC our senior year? I learned more from him too and am still singing in the choir.

I remember Gene Black well. I also used what I learned from him to sing in church choirs later on. Danny B. and I were pals and were often disruptive trying to be funny during practices.
ReplyDeleteOne funny thing I remember was when Gene was having us sing at a church one Sunday evening. I had been water skiing that afternoon and was running late. I didn't have time to change so I just put my chorus robe over my river outfit. I actually missed the first song. After the song was over, Gene turned to face the audience to announce the next song and I slipped through a side door and into my proper position. When Gene turned around, I received a combined look of surprise and glare of anger from him. Needless to say, my chorus grade suffered that six weeks!
